About the event

Through this invitation, I was asked to create a Soul Poem of Chicago — a Soloem — that brings forward the story of Kitihawa, a Potawatomi woman, founder, and wife of Jean Baptiste Point DuSable, who is often recognized as Chicago’s first non-Native settler.

Rooted in historical research, Indigenous truth-telling, and cultural representation, my Soloem honors Kitihawa’s rightful place in Chicago’s history and uplifts the enduring presence of Indigenous peoples in the city’s story.
